In a small bowl, combine cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika (if using). Stir to mix thoroughly.
In a frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once heated, add the spice blend to the oil and stir for 30 seconds to allow the flavors to bloom. Be careful not to burn the spices!
If making a sauce or marinade, add lime juice and honey to the pan. Stir to combine and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to thicken slightly.
Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes before drizzling over your dish or using as a marinade. You can also store it in an airtight container for later use.
- Adjust the Heat: Cayenne is hot, so start with a smaller amount if you’re sensitive to spice and gradually increase to your desired heat level.
- Use Fresh Spices: The fresher your cayenne pepper and other spices, the more vibrant and flavorful your recipe will be.
- Balance with Sweetness: If you find the heat overwhelming, a drizzle of honey or a splash of lime juice will balance out the flavors beautifully.
- Don’t Overcook the Spices: When cooking the spice blend in oil, be careful not to overheat the pan or burn the spices, as this can make them bitter.
- Storage: Store any leftover spice mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It can last for up to 6 months, but for the best flavor, try to use it within a few weeks.
