Equipment

  • Non-stick skillet or griddle
  • Shallow bowl for egg mixture
  • Whisk or fork for mixing
  • Tongs or spatula for flipping
  • Plate for serving

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 8 slices bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • salt
  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh fruit

Instructions

  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar (if using), and a pinch of salt until fully combined.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Let it melt and coat the pan evenly.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are fully coated. Let any excess egg drip off before placing the bread on the hot skillet.
  • Cook the bread for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Add more butter to the skillet as needed to prevent sticking.
  • Once cooked, transfer the French toast to plates and serve immediately with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

  • Use Stale or Day-Old Bread: Fresh bread is too soft and may become soggy. Stale bread absorbs the egg mixture better and holds up well while cooking.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Cook the French toast in batches if necessary. Overcrowding the pan leads to uneven cooking and soggy toast.
  • Adjust the Heat: Keep the heat at medium to medium-low to avoid burning the toast before it cooks through. The goal is a crispy exterior and soft interior.
  • Customize with Toppings: Fresh berries, whipped cream, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup can elevate this dish and add extra sweetness.
  • Experiment with Bread: While classic French toast is best made with brioche or challah, using other bread varieties like cinnamon-raisin bread can bring new flavors to the dish.
